This stereoscopic photograph is the only historically authentic 3-D image of the Iwo Jima flag-raising which took place on Feb. 23, 1945.

The three-dimensional nature of this photograph becomes apparent when viewed through standard red/blue 3-D glasses. This stereoscopic effect is NOT the result of digital manipulation or computer trickery. It is produced by the juxtaposition of two separate historical images, which were taken at the same precise moment.

Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal and Marine cinematographer Sgt. Bill Genaust were standing side-by-side, just a few feet apart, when the flag was being raised. A single frame from Genaust’s motion-picture footage proved to be an exact match of Rosenthal’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph.
